Women in Focus

women in focus 2 v2

This strand centers the artistic expression of African and diaspora womxn image-makers.

We present to you a range of heartfelt, sensitive portraits of female strength and resilience. This includes a portrait of contemporary Djibouti through a tender coming of age story (also the first feature to be directed by a female director from the country), a portrayal of avarice with the aim to purloin ancestral land, the story of a group of exceptional young women in Khartoum determined to play football professionally, a unique, collaborative video essay drawing together Black female artists and activists from Scotland and beyond to reflect and reimagine new futures during/post-COVID-19; and finally, films with views on marriage, motherhood, sexuality and desire, in a society where many of the menfolk are absent due to labour migration. We are proud to continue our tradition of supporting complex identities searching for their place and finding audiences for this work.
