Khartoum Offside + Discussion

A group of exceptional young women in Khartoum are determined to play football professionally. They are prepared to defy the ban imposed by Sudan’s Islamic government and they will not take no for an answer. Their battle to get officially recognised as the country’s national women’s team is fearless, courageous and often humorous. But their struggle is unwavering.

Award-winning Sudanese filmmaker Marwa Zein’s intimate documentary follows the women over a number of years through their moments of hope and disappointment. Despite the National Football Federation receiving FIFA funds earmarked for the women’s football, the team continues to be marginalised. However, there is a new spark of hope when the elections within the federation could mean real change of the entire system.

This screening is presented in partnership with United Glasgow FC and The Sudanese Community in Edinburgh, who will host a discussion about the film on Sunday 15 November at 8:30pm live on our Facebook page.*

*It will also be recorded and uploaded to our Vimeo page within 24 hours of the event.
